On ecommerce sites, the first step of purchasing a product is adding it to the shopping cart. Clear feedback that this step was completed successfully gives users a sense of control and allows them to confidently continue shopping or proceed with their checkout. (It also complies with two of the 10 usability heuristics — visibility of system status and error prevention, as it reassures people that they have not slipped and added the wrong item.)
